Detailed Itinerary
(Please note that due to the nature of this expedition the itinerary shown below is subject to change due to local conditions)

Start: Ageciras Spain (Mainland Europe)
Finnish: Cauta Spain (N. Africa)
Total distance: 3258km approx
Off road: 2000km approx
Average: 271km per day


Day 1
Early Start - Cross from Algeciras to Ceuta Drive to Fez
Distance: 300km approx
Campsite at Fez
We will meet at the ferry terminus in Algeciras and catch the first ferry across to Ceuta and cross the border into Morocco. Once we have cleared customs and immigration we will drive south to the ancient city of Fez. We should arrive at the camp site by mid afternoon allowing enough time for a late afternoon visit to the 13th Century Medina and sampling some Fez's world famous cuisine in the evening.

Day 2
Drive to: Taza - Guercif - Mahirija - Debdou
Distance: 244km Approx
Rough Camp
Our second day takes us East, south of the Riff Mountains to the edge of the desolate Rekkam Plateau where we leave the tarmac and head up onto the edge of the plateau for heading for a rough camp near Debdou

Day 3
Early Start - Drive to: Matarka - Anoual
Distance: 419km approx
Rough Camp North of Anoul
We head south from the hills around Debdou on increasingly deserted stony piests across the barren plateau towards Anoul

Day 4
Anoual - Gourrama - Gorges du Ziz - Errachidia
Distance: 250km approx
Campsite Errachidia
Still following tracks south, we pass through Anoual and try and find the prehistoric rock engravings near Borj Ali ou Hadid. We then head west through what promises to be fantastic scenery to the famous Gorges du Ziz and on to a campsite near Errachidia passing many old Kasbhas along the way.

Day 5
Errachidia - Boundnib - Erg Chebbi
Distance: 320km approx

From Errachidia we head west for 90km to Boundnib before crossing the Oude Guir and turning south in to the desert, travelling south along ever sandier pistes until we reach the Dunes at Erg Chebbi for a rough camp among the dunes.

Day 6
Drive to Mhamid
Distance: 250km approx

After a morning exploring the dunes and practicing sand recovery techniques, we head South then West along the Algerian border following sandy pistes until we break free of the Oude Ziz and hit the open desert to camp.

Day 7
Drive to Mhamid - Lake Iriki
Distance: 250km approx
Rough Camp Lake Iriki area
From our campsite we head West again on broken tracks and the open desert toward the hills on the horizon. After crossing the stony summit of Jebal Tadrart we descend briefly into the Draa Valley to the dunes of Mhamid. From Mhamid we head West again down the Oued Draa to camp around Lake Iriki - a vast dried up lake bed surrounded by rocky Hammanda and orange sand dunes.

Day 8
Drive to Lake Iriki - Foum-Zguid - Zagora
Distance: 250km approx
From our camp at Lake Iriki, we follow alternate rocky and sandy pistes to Foum-Zguid and our first encounter with tarmac again after driving over 1000km off road. From Foum-Zguid we head North then west to the bustling town of Zagora for hot showers at the campsite and a chance to replenish supplies.

Day 9
Drive to Ait-Slilo - Tizi n Tazazert - Tinerhir
Distance: 200km approx

From Zagora we head North to Tamlelt for 70 km along stony piests to a rock engraving site and then on to Tazzarine where we pick up the tarmac again for 30km before heading North via a little used piste over the Tizi n Tazazert pass high in the Jebel Sarhro. From the summit of the pass we then head North East to pick up the tarmac again and head toward Tinerhir and the famous Todra Gorge.

Day 10
Tinerhir - via Todra Gorge - Rich
Distance: 200km approx
Campsite Rich
From a campsite close to the foot of the gorge, we follow the river up through the gorge and into the valleys of the high Atlas via a rough piste to emerge on the other side of the Mountains at Rich

Day 11
Rich to Meknes / Volubilis
Distance: 275km approx
Campsite either in Meknes or nr Volubils
A quick run up the tarmac to the ancient roman site of Volubils just North of Meknes, the imperial capital of the 16th Sultan Moulay Idriss


Day 12
Early start - drive to Ceuta
Distance: 300k approx
Drive North to the boarder with Spain at Ceuta and cross the straits back to main land Europe at Algeciras.
