Environmental and Responsible Tourism Policy
Saharan Exploration follows The Association Of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) Responsible Tourism guidelines as rigidly as possible so as to minimise our impact on the environment and local cultures.
To protect the environment its flora, fauna and landscapes.
Key to the Saharan Exploration experience is both understanding and learning about the extremely fragile eco-systems that exist in the desert, our impact on them and how this impact can be minimised.
To respect local cultures traditions, religions and built heritage.
Saharan Exploration is committed to helping preserve the Saharas heritage, traditions and culture.
To benefit local communities both economically and socially.
We benefit local communities by using local guides, services and accommodation. We also maintain and encourage local skills and traditions through tourism and hope the impression that we give the locals of our western culture is both positive and accepting.
To conserve natural resources from office to destination.
Saharan exploration is committed to conserving natural resources as much as possible. Primarily, we have stopped using printed brochures where every possible which not only saves trees by the forest full and saves everyone money. We have also switched to low energy lighting and equipment in the office and recycle where ever possible. By the very nature of the desert, natural resources in the Sahara are extremely limited. Whilst on expeditions, we minimise our impact by conserving water and firewood where ever possible.
To minimise pollution through noise, waste disposal and congestion.
However you look at it, driving vehicles with large engines over long distances is not very good for the environment, which is why each of our expeditions carries a carbon offset charge, enabling us to invest in sustainable projects such as tree planting. Whilst on expeditions, we minimise our impact on the environment by disposing of rubbish and waste responsibly. This can often mean carrying rubbish to the next town rather than burning and burying it under the sand.
